Ford Recalls 740,000 Vehicles for Rollaway Risk

Ford Motor Company initiated a recall affecting 741,195 vehicles on June 24, 2024, following a report submitted to the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall addresses a defect in the transmission parking pawl, which could lead to vehicles rolling away while parked. This issue arises when the parking pawl experiences temporary engagement during certain transmission shifts while the vehicle is in motion, potentially damaging the park system components.

According to Ford's report, if these park system components are compromised, the transmission's ability to hold the vehicle in place may be impaired, especially if the parking brake is not engaged. This could result in unintended vehicle movement, leading to damage to the vehicle, surrounding property, or injury to bystanders. The company estimates that approximately 1% of the recalled vehicles will exhibit this defect.

The recall encompasses five distinct vehicle models produced between 2017 and 2021, with model years ranging from 2018 to 2021. Affected models include the 2021-2021 Ford F-150, 2020-2021 Lincoln Aviator, 2020-2021 Ford Explorer, 2018-2021 Lincoln Navigator, and 2018-2021 Ford Expedition. Ford will begin notifying owners of these vehicles in August 2024, with remedy owner notification letters scheduled to be mailed in April 2027.
