Florin Şerban’s ‘You Don’t Belong Here’ Wins Golden Leopard at Locarno, as Monica Bellucci and Kim Minhee Take Acting Awards

Romanian director Florin Şerban's latest film, "You Don't Belong Here," has been awarded the prestigious Golden Leopard for best film in the International Competition at the 77th Locarno Film Festival. The festival, a significant event in the European film calendar, concluded on August 17, 2024, celebrating cinematic excellence and diverse storytelling. Şerban's film is described as a somber and impactful examination of anti-Roma racism prevalent in Romania, a persistent issue with deep societal roots. This recognition marks a significant achievement for Şerban, whose previous work, "If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle," also garnered international acclaim, winning the Grand Jury Prize and the Best Actor award at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival. In addition to the top prize, "You Don't Belong Here" also received a special mention for its young lead actor, Teodor Butănescu, highlighting the powerful impact of his performance in conveying the film's challenging themes. The International Competition this year featured a strong lineup of 17 films, showcasing a range of directorial visions and narrative approaches from around the globe.

The festival also celebrated distinguished figures in acting. Italian icon Monica Bellucci was honored with the Leopard of Honour, a lifetime achievement award recognizing her extensive and influential career in cinema, spanning decades and numerous acclaimed roles in international productions. South Korean actress Kim Minhee, a regular presence at major film festivals and known for her collaborations with acclaimed directors like Hong Sang-soo, received the Best Actress award for her performance in "The Other Way." The Best Actor award was presented to the ensemble cast of "The Village," directed by Giorgio Diritti, acknowledging the collective strength of their performances in the Italian production.

Presiding over the jury for this year's festival was acclaimed American filmmaker Wes Anderson, known for his distinctive visual style and narrative sensibilities in films such as "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "Moonrise Kingdom." The jury also comprised other influential figures from the international film industry, including French director Céline Sciamma, celebrated for her feminist narratives in films like "Portrait of a Lady on Fire," and Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher, a respected performer in European cinema. The Locarno Film Festival, held annually in the picturesque Swiss town of Locarno, has long been a champion of auteur cinema, providing a vital platform for emerging talent and films that push artistic boundaries and delve into complex social and political issues.
