Florida AG Seeks to Overturn Tesla's $243M Autopilot Verdict

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has formally requested a federal appeals court to overturn the $243 million verdict awarded to the family of a victim in a fatal crash involving Tesla's Autopilot system. The brief, filed on July 9, also includes the support of the attorneys general from Alabama and Georgia, who have joined the appeal to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.

The core of the request is to have the entire judgment vacated. Alternatively, the attorneys general are asking the court to reduce the $200 million punitive damages portion of the award. They propose that punitive damages should not exceed three times the compensatory damages, a common legal standard. The original verdict was delivered by a Miami jury, which found Tesla liable for the crash that resulted in a fatality.

This legal challenge by state attorneys general represents a significant intervention in a case that has drawn considerable attention to the safety and accountability of advanced driver-assistance systems like Tesla's Autopilot. The outcome of this appeal could have implications for future litigation involving autonomous driving technology and the extent of manufacturer liability in such incidents.
