Fisa spy powers almost certain to expire after Congress fails to act – US politics live

A key provision of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (Fisa) is set to expire on Friday night, as the US Congress has failed to pass an extension before the deadline. This expiration follows a backlash against former President Donald Trump's announcement that Bill Pulte, head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency and a Republican donor, would serve as acting Director of National Intelligence (DNI). While Trump has since nominated Jay Carney for the permanent DNI role, the legislative body has not acted on Fisa's Section 702. Separately, Trump's appointed board at the Kennedy Center is attempting a last-minute effort to prevent the removal of his name from the performing arts facility's facade, following a court order by US district judge Christopher Cooper on May 29. Congressman Robert Garcia has called for testimony from Vice President JD Vance and other officials regarding the "White House cover-up" of the Epstein files, as revealed by The New York Times. Additionally, federal authorities are investigating a large etching of "8647" discovered on the grass of the National Mall.
