FIA Confirms Red Bull's ICE Dominance in 2026 F1 Engine Regulations, Despite Overall Performance Gaps

The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motorsport, has officially declared that Red Bull Powertrains currently possesses the most powerful internal combustion engine (ICE) in Formula 1 for the 2026 season. This significant pronouncement comes after the second assessment under the Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) framework, a mechanism introduced as part of the comprehensive 2026 engine regulations. The results of this latest evaluation, released shortly after the Dutch Grand Prix, closely mirror the initial rankings published three months prior, underscoring a consistent performance trend.

Despite Red Bull's current winless streak across the first 12 races of the 2026 season, a stark contrast to their previous dominant periods, the FIA has denied the team any opportunity to upgrade its power unit. This ruling effectively establishes Red Bull's ICE as the benchmark for combustion performance within the heavily regulated hybrid era. The ADUO mechanism itself was designed to foster greater parity within the sport. It allows manufacturers identified as having a substantial power deficit compared to the leading ICE standard to access additional homologated upgrades, thereby aiming to level the competitive playing field.

The most recent ADUO assessment revealed that Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains, the engine division of the German automotive giant Mercedes-Benz, is operating within a two to four percent deficit relative to the leading ICE performance standard. Meanwhile, Audi Sport, Ferrari S.p.A.'s engine division, and Honda Racing Corporation's F1 engine program were all found to be more than four percent behind this benchmark. Consequently, Mercedes has been granted one additional upgrade token for both the 2026 and 2027 seasons. The other three chasing manufacturers – Audi, Ferrari, and Honda – will each receive two development tokens to enhance their power units.

This intricate evaluation process and the resulting allocation of development tokens have become a significant point of discussion and contention within the Formula 1 paddock. It is crucial to understand that the current ADUO formula exclusively measures the performance of the internal combustion engine component of the power unit. It deliberately excludes the electrical elements, which, in the current hybrid era, contribute nearly half of the total vehicle performance. Therefore, while Red Bull leads in ICE power according to this specific metric, this assessment does not provide a complete picture of the overall performance of the hybrid systems employed by the teams, nor does it necessarily reflect their on-track competitiveness in terms of outright lap times or race results.
