FDA Warns Pharmacy Over Illegal GLP-1 Compounding

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning letter to Empower Pharmacy this month, detailing concerns over the company's mass production of compounded GLP-1 drugs. These drugs are primarily used for weight loss and diabetes management. The FDA's letter specifically cited "illegal copycat manufacturing" and "insanitary conditions" observed at the pharmacy's facility. The warning letter, dated May 10, 2024, follows an inspection of Empower Pharmacy's Denver, Colorado, facility. The agency stated that Empower Pharmacy has been compounding drugs that are essentially copies of FDA-approved medications, which is a violation of federal law. Specifically, the FDA pointed to the compounding of semaglutide and tirzepatide, the active ingredients in popular weight-loss drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro. The FDA's concern is that compounded versions may not meet the same rigorous safety, quality, and efficacy standards as the original, FDA-approved drugs. The agency also highlighted that Empower Pharmacy was compounding these drugs without demonstrating that they are equivalent to the innovator products or that there is a lack of commercial availability of the approved drug. The inspection also revealed insanitary conditions, including evidence of rodent and insect contamination, which pose a significant risk to patient safety. The FDA warned that such conditions could lead to contamination of the compounded drugs, potentially causing serious adverse events.
