FBI Seizes Over $560,000 in Crypto for Hamas

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has seized more than $560,000 in cryptocurrency donations designated for Hamas, the U.S. Department of Justice announced on Tuesday. This operation successfully disrupted a significant financing network used by the militant group. In addition to the cryptocurrency, the Justice Department also took control of website domains and communication platforms that Hamas utilized for fundraising and recruitment purposes. Furthermore, law enforcement obtained information pertaining to thousands of individuals who had contacted Hamas with the intention of providing financial support.

Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, stated in a video announcement that the message to Hamas is clear: "your networks are not secure, your crypto is vulnerable, and we will not stop until your ability to wage war is defeated." According to FBI affidavits filed in connection with the seizures, Hamas commenced its exploration of virtual currency fundraising around early 2019. This initiative was spearheaded by its Qassam Brigades, the group's military wing. Hamas actively solicited donations through its Telegram channel and employed direct online fundraising methods. Affidavits indicate that Hamas officials boasted about the untraceable nature of these virtual currencies, and their websites provided explicit instructions on how to make anonymous donations.

A pivotal investigative breakthrough occurred last year when FBI officials identified a specific financing network that was soliciting donations for the Qassam Brigades using virtual currency. A confidential source located within the United States alerted law enforcement to a Telegram post that requested contributions to an email address directly associated with Hamas. This led to a more targeted and effective disruption of the group's financial operations. Brett Leatherman, an FBI Assistant Director in charge of its Cyber Division, affirmed the bureau's commitment to "continue to use its authorities to intercept illicit funds and prevent terrorist organizations from exploiting digital networks to finance their operations."
