Families storm Ebola treatment centre in DRC, remove patients

Families of suspected Ebola patients in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) stormed an Ebola treatment center in Beni on March 28, 2024, forcibly removing patients. The incident occurred at the Beni General Hospital's isolation unit, which was established to contain the ongoing Ebola outbreak. According to a World Health Organization (WHO) official, the families bypassed security and medical personnel to take at least three patients from the facility. This action poses a significant risk to public health, potentially spreading the virus to the community and hindering containment efforts. The DRC's Ministry of Health condemned the actions, emphasizing the importance of quarantine protocols in controlling the epidemic. The WHO and other international health organizations are working with local authorities to reinforce security at treatment centers and to conduct community outreach to explain the necessity of isolation for infected individuals. This event highlights the challenges faced by health workers in managing outbreaks amidst local resistance and misinformation. The current Ebola outbreak in the North Kivu province has seen over 1,000 cases reported since its declaration in August 2018.
