F1 in Spain: An old-fashioned strategy fight can still be thrilling

Formula 1 raced in Spain this past weekend at the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit, a track known for its fast corners and abrasive surface that emphasizes downforce and tire management. The circuit's characteristics made tire wear a significant factor, suggesting strategies beyond the typical one-stop races seen so far this season. The 66-lap race at Catalunya necessitated at least three, possibly four, sets of Pirelli tires to complete. As tires degrade, lap times can slow by 0.2–0.3 seconds, creating opportunities for strategic advantages like the "undercut." This involves pitting early for fresh tires and leveraging the performance difference to gain track position while rivals are on older, slower rubber. A four-stint race, involving an additional pit stop, costs approximately 22 seconds due to pit lane transit and tire changes. However, by working the tires harder over shorter stints, teams could potentially offset this time loss and gain a strategic advantage.
