Two former employees of the luxury fashion house Chanel in Hong Kong have been sentenced to prison for their involvement in the theft of approximately $2.4 million worth of handbags. The court handed down sentences of 22 and 20 months respectively to the former staff members, identified as a 35-year-old former logistics manager and a 31-year-old former warehouse assistant.

Chanel, like many luxury brands, has established protocols for dealing with unsellable or defective merchandise. Since 2019, the company has utilized L’Atelier des Matières, a platform initiated by Chanel and operating under the circular materials hub Nevold. This initiative is designed to recycle deadstock, unsold, and defective goods, aiming to prevent their resale on the grey market and maintain brand exclusivity. The stolen handbags were part of this inventory, destined for disposal or recycling through such channels. The prosecution highlighted that the value of the stolen goods was substantial, underscoring the severity of the breach of trust.
