Hunger Games Prequel 'Sunrise on the Reaping' Announced

Lionsgate announced on June 6, 2024, that a new installment in The Hunger Games franchise, titled 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping,' is in development. This prequel novel, penned by Suzanne Collins, will explore the backstory of Haymitch Abernathy, a pivotal character from the original trilogy. Collins, who authored the first three Hunger Games books in 2008, 2009, and 2010, is returning to the dystopian world she created to tell Haymitch's story. The novel is slated for release on March 18, 2025.

Haymitch Abernathy, famously portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the film adaptations of Collins' original book trilogy, served as the mentor to Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. His character is known for his cynicism, alcoholism, and deep-seated trauma stemming from his own Hunger Games experience. The prequel is set to take place 40 years before the events of the first Hunger Games novel, which was published in 2008. This places the narrative approximately 64 years after the Dark Days, the rebellion of the districts against the Capitol. The story will delve into Haymitch's reaping and his subsequent participation in the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. This particular iteration of the Games was notable for its increased brutality and its selection of twice the usual number of tributes from each district, meaning 48 participants in total.

The film adaptation of 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping' is being fast-tracked by Lionsgate, with a planned release in theaters on November 20, 2026. The project is being produced by Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, who have been instrumental in the success of the previous Hunger Games films. Francis Lawrence, who directed 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,' 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1,' and 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2,' is also returning to direct the new film.
