Ethiopia's Tsegay handed four-month doping ban

Ethiopian runner Gudaf Tsegay received a four-month ban on March 18, 2024, after admitting to the presence of a prohibited substance during an out-of-competition test. The ban, which is backdated to February 20, 2024, means Tsegay will miss the upcoming World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow. The substance found was a banned stimulant, and the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) accepted Tsegay's explanation that she inadvertently ingested it through a contaminated supplement. The AIU's decision noted that Tsegay cooperated fully with the investigation and demonstrated remorse. Tsegay, a former two-time world champion in the 1500m and 5000m, will be eligible to return to competition on June 20, 2024. This ban impacts her preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
