EIA: Renewables just hit 30% of US electricity generation

Renewable energy sources generated 30.0% of the total US electricity supply in the first four months of 2026, marking a 2.2% increase compared to the same period in 2025. This data, released by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) and analyzed by the SUN DAY Campaign, indicates a steady growth in renewable energy's contribution to the national grid. Solar power saw a significant expansion, increasing its share by 29.4% year over year, while wind power's contribution rose by 10.4%. Despite these gains, natural gas remained the largest source of electricity generation, accounting for 41.6% of the total. Coal's share continued to decline, falling to 17.1% from 20.9% in the previous year. Hydropower's contribution remained relatively stable, at 5.4%. The EIA's findings highlight a continuing trend towards cleaner energy sources, driven by advancements and investments in solar and wind technologies, while also underscoring the ongoing reliance on natural gas for baseload power.
