Dungeons & Dragons Sequel Script Written, Filming Uncertain

A script for a sequel to the film "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" has been completed. Co-director and writer John Francis Daley confirmed that he and co-director Jonathan Goldstein were hired to write the script for a follow-up movie.

However, the production of this sequel is currently uncertain and may not proceed to filming. The primary reason cited for this potential cancellation is "financial reasons." This suggests that the projected costs or expected financial returns for a second "Dungeons & Dragons" movie are not currently meeting the requirements for its greenlighting and subsequent production.

The first "Dungeons & Dragons" film, "Honor Among Thieves," was released in March 2023. It garnered positive reviews from critics and audiences, achieving a Rotten Tomatoes score of 90% based on 324 reviews. Despite the critical acclaim, its box office performance was considered modest, grossing $208.2 million worldwide against a production budget of $150 million. This financial outcome likely plays a significant role in the current hesitation to move forward with a sequel.

Daley and Goldstein had previously expressed enthusiasm for continuing the story, indicating that the written script was intended to build upon the established world and characters. The decision to not move forward with filming, despite having a completed script, highlights the complex financial calculations involved in Hollywood film production, where critical success does not always guarantee the greenlighting of subsequent installments.
