Netflix Developing D&D ‘Ravenloft’ Series

Netflix is developing a live-action series titled 'Ravenloft,' drawing inspiration from the popular gothic horror setting within the Dungeons & Dragons franchise. This new project is being brought to life by writer and executive producer John August, alongside executive producer Alfonso Cuarón. Hasbro Entertainment is also involved as a producer. The 'Ravenloft' setting is known for its dark, atmospheric tales and often features player characters trapped in cursed domains ruled by powerful villains known as Darklords. These domains are typically shrouded in a magical mist that prevents escape and isolates them from the rest of the Dungeons & Dragons multiverse. The series aims to capture the essence of this distinctive setting, which has been a staple in Dungeons & Dragons campaigns since its introduction in the 1980s. Ravenloft first appeared as an adventure module in 1983, and its popularity led to a full campaign setting book in 1994, further expanding its lore and introducing iconic locations like Barovia, ruled by Count Strahd von Zarovich. The development of this series marks a significant expansion of Dungeons & Dragons content on streaming platforms, following previous adaptations and a growing interest in tabletop role-playing games. This initiative by Netflix is separate from other Dungeons & Dragons related projects, such as the recently released film 'Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,' which explored the world of 'The Forgotten Realms,' another prominent Dungeons & Dragons setting. The involvement of John August, known for his work on films like 'Big Fish' and 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,' and Alfonso Cuarón, the acclaimed director of 'Children of Men' and 'Roma,' suggests a high-quality production aiming for a mature and sophisticated tone. Hasbro Entertainment, the entertainment division of the toy and game company Hasbro, which owns the Dungeons & Dragons intellectual property through its subsidiary Wizards of the Coast, is a key partner in bringing this adaptation to fruition.
