Juilliard Grad's Dream Harlem Penthouse Becomes Moldy Nightmare

In May 2025, Lydia Rhea, a 26-year-old freelance musician and Juilliard graduate, along with her two roommates, signed a 13-month lease for a newly constructed duplex penthouse at 463 West 125th Street in Harlem, New York. The unit, which offered a net rent of $5,485 per month after a one-month concession, was marketed as a modern luxury space with a spacious layout, multiple bathrooms, and a private terrace. As the first tenants, Rhea anticipated a pristine living experience, but their occupancy quickly devolved into a year-long ordeal characterized by construction defects, a significant mold infestation, and issues with mail delivery, according to Rhea's account to Realtor.com®.

Public records indicate the building is owned by an LLC affiliated with real estate developer Tomer Chen, founder of ReGlobe. Malek Management was identified as the building's manager through company emails shared by Rhea. However, a representative from Malek Management stated that the company no longer manages the property, and Chen did not respond to multiple requests for comment. The situation highlights a broader issue of mold complaints in New York City; in Fiscal Year 2025, the city's Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) received 38,278 mold complaints, a decrease of approximately 8.5% from the 41,835 complaints filed in the previous year. Harlem was noted as the moldiest borough in New York City in 2024.

Rhea described the initial appeal of the apartment, noting its clean appearance, convenient access to public transportation, and promising living space. However, the reality of the unit's condition led to significant distress. The persistent mold issues and other defects have turned what was intended to be a dream living situation into a constant source of frustration and concern for Rhea and her roommates, impacting their ability to rehearse and live comfortably in their new home.
