Dual Salmonella Outbreaks Spread Across 30+ States, Prompting Recalls and Hospitalizations

Consumers are facing a dual threat from foodborne illnesses, with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirming two significant, multistate outbreaks of Salmonella. These outbreaks, linked to entirely different food sources, collectively span more than 30 states and have resulted in over 60 individuals requiring hospitalization. The first major Salmonella outbreak is associated with eggs. As previously reported, a substantial recall was issued for nearly 1.6 million cartons, amounting to approximately 19 million individual eggs. These eggs were produced by Midwest Poultry Services, a company known for its large-scale egg production, and were distributed to a wide array of grocery retailers across the nation. The CDC's most recent update, as of July 24, indicated that 98 cases of illness have been definitively linked to this egg contamination. A concerningly high proportion of these cases, 26 individuals, necessitated hospitalization, highlighting the severity of the infections.

Prominent brands affected by this recall include Kroger, a major supermarket chain; Simple Truth, Kroger's private label for organic and natural foods; Brookshire’s, a regional supermarket chain; Cal-Maine Foods, the largest producer and distributor of fresh shell eggs in the United States; and Country Morning. These recalled products were available at various grocery stores, including Kroger and Brookshire Grocery, in select states. The geographical reach of the egg-linked outbreak is extensive, with infected individuals identified in 17 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, and West Virginia.

The CDC announced the second Salmonella outbreak yesterday, differentiating it from the egg-related incident by its suspected food source: jalapeños.
