Dozens died at Camp Mystic last summer. Now the Texas campground has filed for bankruptcy

Camp Mystic filed for bankruptcy on June 10, 2026, nearly a year after 28 people died in a flood at the Texas campground on July 4, 2025. The victims included two teenage counselors, 25 campers, and the camp’s co-executive director, who were trapped when the Guadalupe River rose 37 feet in one hour. The camp’s operators reported total debts between $10 million and $50 million, with assets ranging from $1 million to $10 million. In November 2025, families of the victims filed a lawsuit seeking over $1 million in damages, alleging the camp failed to implement adequate safety measures during the approaching flood. Initially, Camp Mystic’s owners planned to reopen for the summer 2026 season, but they withdrew their operating application after parents of the deceased campers testified at a legislative hearing. The camp stated its decision was to avoid causing further harm by defending its rights under Texas law. A state investigation released prior to the bankruptcy filing found that Camp Mystic inadequately prepared for storms, delayed evacuations, failed to train staff for emergencies, and lacked effective communication with families.
