Delta CEO: Airfare a 'tremendous bargain' despite price hikes

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian asserted on Friday that airfares are still a "tremendous bargain" despite a notable increase in ticket prices this year. Speaking on CNBC's Squawk Box, Bastian compared the rise in air travel costs to inflation in other consumer goods, suggesting that passengers' concerns about flight prices are less significant than their concerns about other products. He indicated that while airfares have increased, they have not kept pace with the rising costs of groceries, clothing, or car insurance.

Bastian's comments come as airlines have been increasing ticket prices to counteract a surge in jet fuel costs. Industry insiders and analysts have argued that these price hikes are necessary and overdue, as airline ticket prices have not risen as rapidly as other economic sectors affected by inflation since 2022. According to data from the Federal Reserve, the average fare of $329 in May was approximately 23% cheaper in real terms than it was a decade prior, adjusted for inflation.

Delta's chief commercial officer, Joe Esposito, echoed this sentiment during the company's earnings call on Friday. He stated that the industry "has no other choice" but to maintain current pricing levels and expressed "a lot of confidence" in preserving the existing pricing environment. This outlook offers little reassurance for travelers hoping for price reductions as they plan summer travel or look ahead to booking flights for Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays later in the year.

The airline industry's justification for increased fares centers on offsetting rising operational expenses, particularly fuel. While travelers may experience higher upfront costs, the industry's perspective, as articulated by Bastian and Esposito, is that air travel remains a relatively affordable option when compared to the broader inflationary pressures impacting the economy. This stance suggests that passengers should anticipate sustained or potentially further increased airfare costs in the near future.
