Darren Vargas Documents Desert Boxing Gym in 'Moretón' Photo Book

Los Angeles-based photographer Darren Vargas has released a new photo book titled 'Moretón,' published by FRIENDS EDITIONS. The book offers an intimate portrait of the Lee Espinoza Coachella Valley Boxing Club, a non-profit organization located in Southern California. 'Moretón,' which translates to 'bruise' in Spanish, aims to document not only the sport of boxing but also the profound sense of legacy, community resilience, and the individuals who contribute to making the gym a vital hub. The Lee Espinoza Coachella Valley Boxing Club was established in the 1980s by Lee Espinoza, a figure locally recognized as the "godfather of boxing." For decades, Espinoza has continued to operate the gym, providing access to the public free of charge. This sustained dedication highlights Espinoza's commitment to his community, as evidenced by the numerous generations who have achieved success both within the boxing ring and in their broader lives. Vargas expressed that the gym holds significant meaning, representing a place where immigrants can build something for themselves, their communities, and their families. He views the Coachella Valley as a symbol of achieving success from humble beginnings and constructing a supportive environment. The inspiration for this photographic series emerged from the passing of Vargas's grandfather, Esmael, in 2020. During his childhood summers spent with his grandparents in the Coachella Valley, Vargas observed parallels between his grandfather and Lee Espinoza. Following his grandfather's death, Vargas found a sense of solace in boxing, recognizing its power to unite young people from across the desert region, fostering mutual support, reconciliation, and self-forgiveness. Vargas described the project as a response to struggle and hardship, emphasizing the importance of giving back. He noted Lee Espinoza's personal sacrifices in creating a space for the youth in the Coachella Valley, referring to the gym as a "haven in a special place." The book is priced at $60 and is part of a limited edition run of 200 copies. The Lee Espinoza Coachella Valley Boxing Club serves as a testament to the enduring power of community spaces and the impact of individuals dedicated to fostering growth and opportunity, particularly for underserved populations.
