CVS Pharmacies Now Dispense Medications for Dogs and Cats

CVS Health announced on Tuesday its expansion into veterinary pharmaceuticals, enabling customers to fill prescriptions for dogs and cats at approximately 9,000 CVS Pharmacy locations across the United States. This new service will offer a range of medications, including antibiotics, allergy treatments, flea and tick control, insulin, and pain relievers, making them available alongside human medications.

Pet owners can present a physical prescription slip from their veterinarian or have the veterinarian contact the pharmacy directly to initiate the fill. The dispensed medications will be eligible for services such as automatic refills, prescription syncing, and, for certain medications, home delivery. This move aims to position CVS Pharmacy as a comprehensive health and wellness destination for all family members, including pets.

To further integrate the service, pet owners can add their pets to their existing CVS profiles. This allows for online management of pet prescriptions through the CVS Health app. The company stated that additional features, such as electronic prescription capabilities, are planned for implementation in the coming months to enhance convenience for both pet owners and veterinarians.

CVS is entering a market where other major retailers have already established pet prescription services. Companies like Costco, Walmart, Walgreens, and Publix currently offer similar offerings, indicating a growing trend in integrated pharmacy services for both human and animal health needs. Sid Tenneti, Senior Vice President and Interim President of Pharmacy and Consumer Wellness at CVS Health, expressed enthusiasm for the expansion, stating that CVS Pharmacy can now "serve every member of the family."
