Taylor Farms Lettuce Linked to Cyclospora Outbreak

Federal officials confirmed on Monday that iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms is still considered the source of a multi-state outbreak of Cyclospora, a microscopic parasite causing widespread gastrointestinal illness. This reaffirmation aimed to clarify confusion that arose over the weekend following a false positive test result by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Taylor Farms had initially celebrated this test, which inadvertently added to the public's uncertainty.

The outbreak's origins have been subject to ongoing investigation, with many details remaining unclear due to what the FDA describes as vague recall information provided by Taylor Farms. The FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Friday that their traceback investigations consistently pointed to Taylor Farms. These investigations meticulously track food products backward through the supply chain, from affected individuals to the specific farms and production facilities involved.

According to the FDA's findings, multiple traceback efforts repeatedly led investigators to shredded iceberg lettuce. This lettuce was reportedly grown in Central Mexico and supplied by Taylor Farms, which also operates under the name Taylor Fresh Foods. The convergence of these investigations on a single supplier underscores the likely link between the company's product and the ongoing health crisis affecting multiple states.
