College Costs Rise This Fall Due to Inflation and AI Demand

College students are set to experience a significant increase in living expenses this fall, driven by persistent inflation and the growing demand for computing hardware fueled by artificial intelligence development. These rising costs will affect a range of essential items, from technology and software to transportation. The technology sector, in particular, is seeing substantial price hikes. Apple recently increased the prices of its iPads and laptops, including the new Apple Neo, by 15% to 25%. For instance, the base model Apple Neo saw its manufacturer's suggested retail price jump from $599 to $699. According to outgoing CEO Tim Cook, this surge is attributed to the "insatiable demand from AI data centers for hardware, especially computer memory chips." This trend is not isolated to Apple; other major PC manufacturers such as HP, Lenovo, and Microsoft Surface are also raising prices for their devices. A PCMag survey indicated that while consumers are budgeting around $800 for a new laptop, the actual median price has doubled, reflecting these industry-wide increases. The cost of video game consoles has also risen, even for established models of the Xbox and PlayStation. Beyond hardware, the price of computer software and accessories has seen a dramatic increase. Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows a 17.4% year-over-year rise in these categories, marking the largest jump since the agency began tracking this product category in 1997. Some of these price increases are linked to the integration of new AI-powered features, which may be an added cost for students who are often subject to institutional policies limiting AI usage. The impact of inflation extends beyond technology. Students may also face higher costs for transportation, textbooks, and general living expenses. While some educational institutions offer discounts on hardware and software, and manufacturers like Apple and Microsoft provide educational pricing, these measures may not fully offset the overall increase in costs.
