Israel Rejects UN Report on Targeting Palestinian Children

Israel has rejected a United Nations Commission of Inquiry report that asserts its army deliberately targets Palestinian children. The report, released on June 10, 2024, stated that Israeli forces shot 73 Palestinian children in the head, with the commission concluding that these were not accidental injuries but deliberate actions. The commission's findings were based on evidence gathered between July 2014 and December 2023.

Israeli officials have vehemently denied the report's conclusions, labeling them as biased and detached from reality. A statement released by the Israeli Foreign Ministry on June 10, 2024, described the allegations as "baseless" and "anti-Israel." The ministry further argued that the commission failed to acknowledge the complex security environment and the actions of Hamas, which it claims uses children as shields.

The UN Commission of Inquiry, established by the Human Rights Council, focused on alleged violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, and in Israel. The report highlighted a pattern of excessive force used by Israeli forces, leading to a high number of child casualties.

This report adds to a growing body of international criticism regarding Israel's conduct in the occupied Palestinian territories. The Israeli government maintains that its actions are defensive and necessary to protect its citizens from attacks, while international bodies continue to scrutinize the proportionality and legality of its military operations, particularly concerning civilian harm.
