Clayface Trailer Emphasizes Body Horror Elements

DC Studios and Warner Brothers released the first full trailer for Clayface this week, ahead of the San Diego Comic-Con. The film is part of the DC Universe's "Gods and Monsters" arc and was initially developed by horror director Mike Flanagan. Flanagan drew inspiration from the 1992 "Feat of Clay" episode of Batman: The Animated Series, aiming to blend body horror with a tragic thriller narrative. DC Studios CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran approved Flanagan's pitch, integrating the project into their rebooted DCU.

Flanagan eventually departed the project due to scheduling conflicts, with James Watkins taking over as director. However, James Gunn confirmed that the final script maintains Flanagan's original story, with rewrites by Hossein Amini. The movie will explore the origin story of the Matt Hagen version of Clayface, who was previously introduced in the animated series Creature Commandos, voiced by Alan Tudyk. The trailer emphasizes the character's transformative and unsettling physical alterations, aligning with the body horror genre.

Mike Flanagan is known for his work on acclaimed horror series such as The Haunting of Hill House, The Fall of the House of Usher, and Midnight Mass, as well as the film Doctor Sleep. The inclusion of Clayface in the "Gods and Monsters" slate signals a potential shift in tone for the DCU, with a focus on darker, more character-driven narratives. The trailer's release serves to build anticipation for the film and its unique take on a classic DC villain.
