China Sentences Ex-Official to Death for $324 Million Corruption

Yang Youlin, a former local official in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing, was sentenced to death this week for accepting bribes totaling $324 million. The Nanjing Intermediate People's Court found Yang guilty of accepting money and valuables in exchange for business favors and promotions. The court stated that Yang's actions caused particularly severe losses to the state and the people.

This severe sentence underscores China's ongoing commitment to its anti-corruption campaign, which has seen numerous officials at various levels investigated and punished. The campaign, initiated by President Xi Jinping, aims to root out corruption and maintain the ruling Communist Party's legitimacy. Yang's case is one of the largest corruption cases to result in a death sentence in recent years, highlighting the government's zero-tolerance policy for high-level graft.

According to court documents, Yang Youlin served as a deputy director in the Nanjing Municipal Bureau of Land Resources and Real Estate Affairs. During his tenure, he leveraged his position to facilitate illegal land development projects and other business activities for individuals and companies in exchange for substantial financial kickbacks. The investigation revealed a complex network of illicit dealings that spanned several years.

The Nanjing Intermediate People's Court emphasized that the amount of bribes received by Yang was exceptionally large, and his actions severely undermined the fairness of market competition and damaged the interests of the public. The court's decision reflects the gravity with which the Chinese judiciary views such large-scale corruption, particularly when it involves officials in key economic sectors like land and real estate. The sentence, however, is subject to appeal.
