Challenges and Opportunities of Investing in African Startups

Investment in African startups remained resilient in 2025, despite a global tightening of funding conditions. The African Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (AVCA) reported that over $5 billion was invested in African startups during 2025, accompanied by an increase in deal activity. Andrew Firman, a venture capital investor at Kaleo Ventures, discussed the opportunities and challenges present in the African startup ecosystem during an interview with Bloomberg's Jennifer Zabasajja. Firman highlighted the growing potential for significant returns within the continent's burgeoning tech landscape. He noted that while macroeconomic headwinds persist, strategic investment in sectors like fintech, renewable energy, and e-commerce continues to attract attention from both local and international investors. The resilience of African startups is partly attributed to their ability to address local market needs and their increasing access to talent and digital infrastructure. However, challenges such as regulatory complexities, currency fluctuations, and limited exit opportunities for investors remain areas requiring attention and innovation. Firman emphasized the importance of patient capital and a long-term investment horizon for navigating these complexities and unlocking the full potential of the African venture capital market.
