Cyclospora Outbreak Spreads to Nine States

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported this week that a widespread Cyclospora outbreak has now been confirmed in nine U.S. states. The four most recently added states are Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania. These join the previously identified states of Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia, and Michigan, which has been particularly affected by the outbreak.

Cyclospora is an intestinal illness caused by a microscopic parasite. People typically become infected after consuming food or water contaminated with the parasite. Symptoms often include diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, gas, nausea, and fatigue. Vomiting and fever can also occur. The illness is usually treated with antibiotics, and most people recover fully with prompt treatment.

The CDC continues to investigate the source of the contamination. While the specific food or water source has not yet been definitively identified, health officials are working to trace the origins of the outbreak to prevent further spread. The agency advises individuals experiencing symptoms consistent with Cyclospora infection to seek medical attention and to inform their healthcare provider about potential exposure.
