Carney, Trump Agree to Speed Up Trade Talks After Tariffs

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Tuesday that he and former U.S. President Donald Trump have agreed to intensify negotiations on a trade agreement involving Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. This agreement follows Trump's declaration of 50% tariffs on most Canadian goods, which were set to take effect 30 days from Monday. Trump cited unfair discrimination against American autos, alcohol, and dairy products by Canada as the reason for the tariffs.

Carney stated in Ottawa that he spoke with Trump and they "agreed to deepen and speed up our negotiations over the next few weeks." He emphasized Canada's commitment to protecting its jobs, workers, and farmers, and to strengthening its independence and resilience. The imposition of these tariffs carries risks of increased inflation and further strain on the close relationship between the two nations. An administration official indicated that Canada was being held accountable for retaliating against previous U.S. tariffs, similar to China.

The new 50% tariffs are slated to exclude energy products, potash, fish, and critical minerals. However, they will encompass goods previously protected under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The US did not renew the USMCA, initiating a new negotiation period that could extend until 2036. Carney also indicated plans for a virtual meeting with Canadian premiers later on Tuesday to discuss the situation. British Columbia Premier David Eby criticized Trump's actions as a "desperate and flailing approach" that would negatively impact families in his province.
