As of 2025, Starbase reportedly housed 500 full-time residents.

The conflict traces back nine years, to 2015, when Cards Against Humanity acquired a "pristine parcel of land." This acquisition was not for typical business purposes but was part of a public fundraising effort, with approximately 150,000 individuals contributing $15 each, specifically to obstruct former President Donald Trump's US-Mexico border wall plan. The company positioned itself as a land protector, using public support to counter a significant political initiative.

Two years ago, Cards Against Humanity discovered that construction related to Musk's Starbase project had severely impacted their land. The company described the damage in stark terms, stating it was "completely fucked that land with gravel, tractors, and space garbage." This led to legal action. According to Cards Against Humanity, after a protracted legal battle involving "expensive, jizz-gargling lawyers," Musk's team eventually admitted on record that SpaceX had indeed damaged their property. The company further stated that Musk "packed up his space garbage and left" the site.

Now, with their land effectively surrounded by the expanding Starbase city, Cards Against Humanity is employing a tactic reminiscent of their own game's irreverent spirit. They are inviting the public to participate in the "Elon Musk is a Sad Little Bitch with No Friends Monument Design Committee" for a $10 donation. The stated objective is to "build something on our land. Something that will annoy Elon Musk. Something that will make him wonder, for a brief moment, ‘Wait, am I a sad little bitch with no friends?’" This move highlights a pattern of Elon Musk engaging in public disputes, which have previously included a proposed cage fight with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, a public falling out with former President Donald Trump, and a challenge to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
