Capital Weather Gang Becomes Independent Capital Weather
Capital Weather, formerly known as the Capital Weather Gang, announced its departure from The Washington Post to operate as an independent media entity. This transition, effective at the end of May, marks a return to the group's roots and a strategic expansion of its services. The group, which had been providing weather coverage for the Washington, D.C. metro area for eighteen years, will now be known simply as Capital Weather.
Jason Samenow, the founder of the blog, indicated in a message to the Washington, D.C. subreddit that the team was exploring ways to better serve and connect with its audience. The move towards independence allows Capital Weather to "expand beyond just being sort of a local weather desk," according to Samenow. The vision includes developing a "media ecosphere" encompassing a website, newsletter, app, and potentially consulting services, all aimed at delivering comprehensive weather information for those interested in D.C.-area weather.
This strategic shift occurs at a time of significant changes in both audience access to weather data and global weather patterns due to climate change. Capital Weather has launched its own app concurrently with its website, addressing the widespread availability of weather data on smartphones. The organization aims to provide the best available information to its audience, adapting to the evolving landscape of weather forecasting and communication.
