California EV Rebate Excludes 13 Automakers

California's Clean Vehicle Rebate Project (CVRP) has updated its list of eligible vehicle manufacturers, with 13 automakers now excluded from the program as of January 1, 2024. This change means that new electric vehicle purchases from these manufacturers will no longer qualify for the state's rebate.

The exclusion is reportedly due to the manufacturers' failure to meet specific sales volume thresholds or other program requirements. While the exact reasons for each automaker's exclusion were not detailed, the CVRP aims to incentivize the adoption of zero-emission vehicles by offering financial incentives. The program's eligibility criteria are subject to periodic review and updates to ensure alignment with state climate goals and market conditions.

Automakers that remain on the eligible list include major players such as Tesla, Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, among others. These manufacturers continue to offer vehicles that meet the CVRP's criteria for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). The program provides rebates of up to $7,000 for new BEVs and up to $5,000 for new PHEVs, depending on income eligibility and vehicle type.

Consumers who have already purchased or leased an eligible vehicle prior to the January 1, 2024, effective date will still be able to apply for the rebate, provided they meet all other program requirements. The California Air Resources Board (CARB), which oversees the CVRP, stated that the updated list reflects the evolving landscape of electric vehicle production and sales, aiming to direct incentives towards manufacturers actively contributing to the state's transition to clean transportation.
