California Wildfire Survivors Petition To Join State’s Investigation Into State Farm

California wildfire survivors are petitioning to join the state's investigation into State Farm, seeking stronger penalties for the insurer's handling of claims following the Eaton and Palisades fires. Marjan Rajabi, whose Pacific Palisades home was destroyed in January 2025, is among the residents who have not yet rebuilt and are now united in their efforts to influence the investigation. The California Department of Insurance launched its investigation last month after State Farm received over 11,300 of the nearly 39,500 claims filed from the fires. A preliminary state review of 220 State Farm claims identified 398 violations, including delayed investigations, underpayments, claim denials, and poor communication. California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara stated that the department is taking decisive action to hold the company accountable. The investigation could lead to fines of up to $2 million and a potential one-year suspension of State Farm's license in California. Rajabi described her experience with seven different State Farm adjusters since the fire as a "second trauma" and noted that she has only received 65% of her insurance payout, requiring her to fund initial rebuilding efforts herself. She expressed a plea for the company to "make us whole so we can rebuild our lives."
