California says AT&T lied to FCC in attempt to shut off old phone network

California regulators stated that AT&T misled the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in an effort to discontinue its legacy copper phone network. In a June 15 filing, the state of California and the California Public Utilities Commission asserted that AT&T's claim of California hindering wireline carrier investment in fiber was untrue. This statement follows AT&T's lawsuit against California, filed last month, challenging the state's refusal to permit the company from ceasing service to all potential customers within its wireline network territory. AT&T had also petitioned the FCC to override California's regulations and allow the company to discontinue service for approximately 199,000 phone customers.
