BYD will pay every last cent for any damage caused by its autopilot

BYD announced on an unspecified date in 2024 that it will cover all costs associated with accidents caused by its God's Eye autonomous driving system, a move unprecedented in the automotive industry. This guarantee, currently limited to one year and available only in China, includes repairs, property damage, and medical expenses, with no stated price ceiling or fine print. The company's system logs will be reviewed to determine liability, ensuring full compensation for accident-derived expenses. This contrasts sharply with Tesla, which has faced significant legal challenges and potential liabilities estimated up to $14.5 billion globally. These lawsuits allege false advertising and autopilot crash liability concerning its "Full Self-Driving" (FSD) feature, which was sold for up to $15,000. Tesla has also been accused of remotely altering purchase agreements, changing the FSD designation to "Full Self-Driving (Supervised)" and making original contracts inaccessible to owners seeking refunds. BYD has already been covering damages from its full self-parking feature since July 2025, applying a similar liability model to its city autonomous driving capabilities.
