Busan Film Festival Honors Ahn Sung-ki, Names Thailand Country of Honor

The 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) has announced its special programming, including a dedicated focus on the late Korean screen legend Ahn Sung-ki. This tribute, titled “Those Beautiful Years, Ahn Sung-ki,” is set to serve as the concluding event for nationwide commemorations honoring the actor's legacy. The festival's market section, the Asian Film Market, has also introduced a new top-tier country partnership, with Thailand being named the inaugural recipient. This designation marks the first time the Asian Film Market has established such a significant collaborative partnership with a specific country.

Busan International Film Festival, established in 1996, is one of Asia's most significant film festivals, aiming to foster the development of Asian cinema by showcasing new films and supporting emerging filmmakers. The festival typically includes various sections such as the Official Program, New Currents, Korean Cinema Today, World Cinema, and Open Cinema, alongside the Asian Film Market, which facilitates co-productions, sales, and distribution for films across the region. The inclusion of a "Special Program in Focus" allows BIFF to delve deeply into the work of a particular filmmaker, actor, or cinematic movement, providing audiences and industry professionals with a comprehensive retrospective.

Ahn Sung-ki, who passed away in February 2023 at the age of 79, was a towering figure in Korean cinema, with a career spanning over six decades and more than 130 films.
