MIT Solve Seeks Scalable Solutions for Next Decade

MIT Solve, an initiative dedicated to finding and scaling innovative solutions to global challenges, has received over 1,000 applications in response to its recent open call for ideas addressing urgent problems and building scalable solutions for the next decade. This initiative, now in its tenth year, has refined its approach from simply identifying and funding remarkable entrepreneurs to ensuring their solutions become integral to existing systems, markets, policies, and infrastructures. The organization's original premise was that the best solutions to global challenges exist externally and require active discovery, funding, and scaling support.

The current cohort of applicants spans six global regions, with a narrowed selection of 25 finalists. From these finalists, 10 winners, referred to as Solvers, will be announced in September. These selected Solvers are expected to present a comprehensive plan for a different approach to building and problem-solving in the coming decade. A significant trend emerging from this year's finalists is the strategic application of technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI). More than one-third of the finalists are developing solutions that leverage AI, not as the primary product, but as a tool to overcome specific obstacles, enhance decision-making, or enable previously impossible functionalities. Examples include an AI-powered tool that provides real-time feedback to math teachers on individual student needs, a system that guides teachers through project-based STEM lessons in offline environments, and a technology designed to optimize supply and logistics for a national blood-safety network across an entire state. Another application focuses on improving access to fair financial services.

MIT Solve's decade of experience has highlighted the critical difference between good solutions and truly great ones: the latter fundamentally alter how systems operate and become embedded within societal structures. This realization has shifted the organization's focus from merely identifying promising ventures to actively facilitating their integration into the broader institutional landscape. The process involves cultivating pipelines and accelerators to support entrepreneurs, but the ultimate goal is to ensure these innovations achieve lasting impact by influencing how people's lives are shaped by markets, policies, and infrastructure. The current open call represents a continuation of this refined strategy, seeking innovators who can demonstrate not only technological prowess but also a deep understanding of systemic change and responsible scaling.
