BTS Withdraws From 2027 GRAMMYs Over New Category

The seven-member South Korean music group BTS announced on March 18, 2024, that they will not submit any music for consideration at the 69th GRAMMY Awards, scheduled for 2027. This decision follows the Recording Academy's recent introduction of a new category, Best Asian Pop Music Performance, which requires the "meaningful use of an Asian language" for eligibility. The group communicated their stance through a coordinated statement across their individual Instagram accounts, expressing a desire for their music to be appreciated for its artistic merit rather than being segmented by geographical origin or linguistic barriers. Their statement read, "We hope our music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language. We thank Army and everyone who has always stood by us." The comeback album ARIRANG was intended for submission before this decision was made. In response to BTS's announcement, Harvey Mason Jr., the CEO of the Recording Academy, stated that he was "saddened" by the group's choice but understood and respected their decision as a fellow music creator. Mason Jr. clarified that the intention behind the new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category was to acknowledge and celebrate the "depth, diversity and extraordinary growth of pop artistry coming out of Asia." He emphasized that the category was designed to "shine a dedicated spotlight on these important artists" and to "expand who is recognized by our 15,000 GRAMMY voters," rather than to create divisions. The Recording Academy, established in 1957, is responsible for organizing and producing the annual GRAMMY Awards, recognizing artistic and technical merit in the recording industry. The GRAMMY Awards are considered one of the most prestigious music awards ceremonies globally. BTS, formed in 2010 by Big Hit Entertainment (now HYBE Corporation), has achieved significant international success, breaking numerous records and garnering a massive global fanbase known as "Army." Their decision to boycott the 2027 GRAMMYs marks a notable moment in their relationship with the awards show, where they have previously been nominated but have not won in major categories.
