‘The Odyssey’ Box Office Debut Tops ‘Oppenheimer’

Christopher Nolan's film "The Odyssey" launched with an estimated $124.5 million in domestic ticket sales and an additional $139.6 million from overseas markets. This debut surpasses the opening weekend performance of Nolan's previous film, "Oppenheimer," and represents the director's strongest opening since "The Dark Knight Rises" in 2012. The Universal Pictures production, an adaptation of Homer's epic poem, had a production budget of $250 million, making it one of the most expensive R-rated films produced. Universal also invested approximately $125 million in marketing the film.

The film's success was significantly driven by its presentation in IMAX format. "The Odyssey" is Nolan's first feature shot entirely with IMAX cameras. The IMAX format accounted for $29.6 million in domestic ticket sales and $51.8 million globally, contributing to IMAX's best weekend ever. IMAX has dedicated its screens exclusively to "The Odyssey" for a three-week period. Even the limited 41 IMAX screens capable of screening the film in 70 mm generated $6.3 million in ticket sales, underscoring the demand for Nolan's preferred format. Some theaters added midnight and 3 a.m. screenings to accommodate the demand for 70 mm IMAX showings, which sold out.

Jim Orr, head of domestic distribution for Universal, expressed satisfaction with the audience's response, stating, "It's incredibly rewarding to see the palpable excitement in theaters this weekend." He further commented that "Nolan has crafted an epic adventure. It's on a scale that audiences have responded to extraordinarily well." The film's global debut is being described as a significant achievement, particularly in a Hollywood landscape dominated by intellectual property, where Nolan successfully adapted one of the world's oldest literary works into a major summer blockbuster.
