Gray told the firm's newest class of analysts that empathy acts as a "superpower," stating, "People want you to win if you treat them in a good way." He clarified that this approach does not preclude ambition or high expectations but advocates for achieving them through considerate interactions.

The advice was delivered to analysts who navigated an exceptionally competitive hiring process. A Blackstone spokesperson indicated that the firm's 2026 summer analyst acceptance rate was under 0.1%. In the previous year, approximately 57,000 applicants vied for 138 entry-level analyst positions, resulting in an acceptance rate of about 0.2%. This rate was 0.4% in 2021, highlighting the increasing selectivity of the firm's recruitment.

Gray emphasized that while elite academic credentials secure an offer, sustained success is driven by a deeper commitment. He urged analysts to "work harder and care more," distinguishing top performers not by their qualifications alone, but by their dedication to excellence. He noted that the most accomplished individuals are those who "really care about getting it right, who turn the extra page, do the extra bit of diligence, get there maybe a little bit earlier."
