BKMEA and WaterAid Bangladesh Sign Water Management Pact

The Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) has entered into a significant partnership with WaterAid Bangladesh, formalizing their collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing sustainable water management practices within the country's industrial sector. This agreement marks a crucial step towards addressing water scarcity and promoting responsible water usage, particularly within the ready-made garment (RMG) industry, a cornerstone of Bangladesh's economy.

The MoU outlines a commitment from both organizations to work collaboratively on initiatives that will foster a more sustainable approach to water resources. This includes the promotion of water-efficient technologies, the implementation of wastewater treatment and recycling systems, and the development of strategies to reduce water pollution. The partnership is expected to leverage BKMEA's extensive network within the RMG sector and WaterAid Bangladesh's expertise in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) to drive tangible improvements on the ground. The BKMEA, representing a substantial portion of Bangladesh's export-oriented knitwear manufacturers, plays a pivotal role in setting industry standards and influencing operational practices among its members.

WaterAid Bangladesh, a non-governmental organization dedicated to improving the lives of the poorest and most marginalized people by helping them gain access to safe water, decent toilets, and good hygiene, brings a wealth of experience in community-based water management and advocacy. Their involvement is expected to provide technical guidance and support to BKMEA members in adopting best practices. The collaboration aims to not only benefit the environment by conserving water and reducing pollution but also to enhance the long-term viability and competitiveness of the Bangladeshi RMG industry by ensuring compliance with increasingly stringent international environmental standards and consumer expectations.
