UK Gen Z Entrepreneur Becomes Europe's Youngest Billionaire

James Dacombe, a 25-year-old entrepreneur, has achieved the status of Europe's youngest self-made billionaire following a significant investment round for his artificial intelligence chip-making firm, Olix. Dacombe, who dropped out of high school at 17 to pursue his entrepreneurial ambitions, now has a net worth exceeding $1 billion. His company, Olix, launched just two years ago, has seen its valuation triple since February and recently secured $312 million in funding, bringing its market capitalization to $3.3 billion. Dacombe holds an estimated 30% stake in Olix, which contributed substantially to him crossing the billion-dollar net worth threshold.

In addition to Olix, Dacombe is also a co-founder and leader of CoMind, a startup focused on brain monitoring technology. He established CoMind in 2017 and currently possesses a 12% ownership stake in the company. CoMind successfully raised $102.5 million in funding in August of the previous year, further bolstering Dacombe's overall wealth. The British founder is among a select group of 11 self-made billionaires globally under the age of 30, and one of only four residing outside the United States.

Dacombe's entrepreneurial journey began at a young age. He started developing applications and websites at 13. While attending Ashville College, a private institution in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, he studied physics, mathematics, economics, and business for his A-levels. However, he found the traditional academic path unsuited to his aspirations and chose to leave high school at 17 to concentrate on growing his nascent company, CoMind. Four years later, he seized a pivotal opportunity to accelerate his business endeavors by participating in the Thiel Fellowship.

The Thiel Fellowship, a prestigious two-year program established by Palantir co-founder Peter Thiel, provides promising entrepreneurs with $250,000 in funding and mentorship to forgo traditional higher education and pursue their innovative ventures. This fellowship has been instrumental in launching the careers of numerous successful entrepreneurs, including Alexandr Wang and Lucy Guo of Scale AI. Dacombe's inclusion in this cohort signifies his emergence as a notable figure in the tech startup landscape, following in the footsteps of other fellowship alumni who have achieved significant financial success and industry impact.
