Billionaire Predicts Moon Commutes by Early 2030s

Dylan Taylor, founder and CEO of Voyager Technologies, has predicted that humans will be living and working on the moon by the early 2030s, suggesting that moon commutes could become a reality within the next decade. Taylor's vision aligns with sentiments previously expressed by prominent tech billionaires including Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Sam Altman, who have all anticipated a future where humanity extends its presence beyond Earth. Taylor emphasized that while a small number of individuals are already working in space aboard the International Space Station, which has maintained continuous human presence for 26 years, the current focus is on scaling this capability to accommodate the general population. He stated exclusively to Fortune, "Humans will definitely be living and working in space. The next step would be the moon. That’ll happen in the 2030s—probably early 2030s." He further elaborated on this future, envisioning a moon base where people live and work, making it possible to "look up at the moon and see lights on the moon." Taylor also addressed the types of jobs that might emerge in this new space economy, highlighting resource mining, the development of orbital data centers, and power grid construction as key areas. He expressed skepticism about the ability of humanoid robots, such as Tesla's Optimus, to fully automate these tasks, asserting that human ingenuity and problem-solving will remain essential. "You’re not going to be able to program Optimus to do everything on the moon," he noted. "You’re going to have to have humans to figure it out." Beyond the moon, Taylor views Mars as a potential backup plan for humanity rather than a primary destination for settlement. Taylor's commitment to the space industry is not merely speculative; he has actively invested in and founded space-related ventures. His career began with angel investments in Space Adventures in 2007 and early investment in Relativity Space, alongside Mark Cuban. In 2017, he established Space For Humanity, a non-profit organization dedicated to facilitating commercial spaceflight opportunities for individuals. Taylor's entrepreneurial background includes building successful public companies across various sectors, including electronics, finance, banking, and real estate, before dedicating his focus to his long-held aspiration of working in space.
