Bethesda Confirms Fallout 3, New Vegas Remasters and Fallout 5

Bethesda Game Studios officially confirmed on May 16, 2024, that remasters of "Fallout 3" and "Fallout: New Vegas" are in active development. This announcement follows months of leaks and speculation surrounding these projects. The studio also reiterated that "Fallout 5" remains its "long-range destination." In addition to these titles, Bethesda revealed it is collaborating with Obsidian Entertainment on an unannounced "Fallout" project.

While no release dates were provided for any of the four confirmed projects, Bethesda hinted at special plans for the franchise's 30th anniversary in 2027. The confirmation of the "Fallout 3" and "Fallout: New Vegas" remasters comes after a toy company inadvertently revealed the "New Vegas" remaster earlier in the year. A mysterious "Fallout" countdown in January had also fueled speculation about a potential "Fallout 3" remaster shadowdrop, which did not materialize.

Bethesda's official statement read, "Fallout is one of our biggest priorities today. Fallout 5 remains our long-range destination, and we have multiple Fallout projects in active development right now." Addressing the remasters directly, the company stated, "We also know many players want to revisit previous Fallout experiences. While we're not announcing any dates today, we have been working on remasters for both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas." The phrasing "have been working on" suggests that both remaster projects are beyond the early conceptual stages, though the lack of specific dates indicates they are not nearing release.

The collaboration with Obsidian Entertainment on an unannounced "Fallout" project represents a significant reveal. Bethesda stated it is "teaming up with" Obsidian for this endeavor. Obsidian Entertainment previously developed "Fallout: New Vegas," which was released in 2010 and is widely regarded by fans for its narrative depth and player choice. The specifics of this new collaborative project remain undisclosed, but its involvement suggests a return to the franchise's roots for the acclaimed studio.
