Park Shines in Sibelius, Dunford Leads Jupiter Ensemble

Violinist Sueye Park made a poetic and enthralling Proms debut at the Royal Albert Hall, performing Sibelius's violin concerto. The performance was part of an evening program led by conductor John Storgårds with the BBC Philharmonic. Park's lean, silvery tone was noted for its penetrating and lyrical quality throughout the concerto.

Storgårds maintained a light touch with the BBC Philharmonic, keeping the orchestral volume subdued for much of the Sibelius concerto, allowing Park's performance to take center stage. Park was described as an "enthralling musical raconteur," imbuing the first movement with a "forthright romantic sweep" and delivering "laser-focused, ethereal fireworks" in the finale.

Following the concerto, Thomas Dunford's Jupiter Ensemble presented a late-night concert, featuring Laurence Kilsby. This effervescent performance offered a different musical experience after the main orchestral program. The review suggests that while the opening strings were barely audible, Park quickly captured the audience's attention, demonstrating a strong command of the Sibelius work.
