’Baahubali’ Animated Feature Director, Producer on Taking Indian Cinema Global and Bringing Indian Audiences to Animation

Arka Mediaworks and Alcyde released "Baahubali: The Eternal War – Part 1" on December 8, 2023, marking a significant expansion of the popular "Baahubali" franchise into animation. This animated feature is a co-production involving Arka Mediaworks from India, Alcyde from France, and Zaratan and Aniventure from the U.K. The film aims to replicate the success of the live-action "Baahubali" films, which achieved substantial box office returns and critical acclaim, with the first installment grossing over $60 million worldwide. Director Jeevanandhan and producer Shobu Yarlagadda expressed their ambition to not only bring Indian stories to a global audience through animation but also to cultivate a larger appreciation for animated content within India. They highlighted the challenges and opportunities in bridging the gap between the high production values of Hollywood animation and the specific narrative and aesthetic preferences of Indian viewers. The production team utilized advanced animation techniques, including Unreal Engine, to achieve a visual quality comparable to contemporary international animated features. Yarlagadda noted that the "Baahubali" brand already possesses a strong global recognition, providing a solid foundation for the animated series to attract both existing fans and new audiences.
