Dabble fined over $1 million for targeting self-excluded gamblers

Dabble, an online betting company, has been issued a significant fine exceeding $1 million by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). This penalty stems from multiple breaches of gambling advertising and consumer protection regulations. Specifically, the ACMA found that Dabble continued to send over 800 promotional messages to 165 individuals who had proactively registered with the federal government's national self-exclusion register, Betstop. This register is a critical tool designed to assist individuals grappling with gambling addictions by enabling them to opt out of all online wagering services and communications.

Beyond the prohibited marketing, the ACMA's investigation also revealed that Dabble failed to adhere to its obligations regarding account closures for registered individuals. The company did not close the betting accounts of 157 people who had signed up for Betstop. Betstop operates on the principle that individuals who make the conscious decision to exclude themselves from online gambling must have their wishes respected by wagering providers. This includes the prompt closure of their accounts and an absolute cessation of any marketing or promotional contact. The ACMA has stressed that the efficacy of Betstop as a consumer protection measure is entirely dependent on wagering companies diligently complying with these rules.
