Australia's Volpato Faces Speeding, Cocaine Charges

Cristian Volpato, a footballer who opted to represent Australia ahead of the 2026 World Cup after previously playing for Italy, is facing multiple charges. The 20-year-old player failed a roadside drug test conducted in Sydney, leading to his arrest. He has subsequently been charged with speeding and possession of cocaine.

Volpato was stopped by police on Oxford Street in Sydney's eastern suburbs on January 20, 2024. Officers detected a smell of cannabis from the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle reportedly uncovered a small quantity of cocaine. The player was taken to Paddington Police Station where he was issued with a court attendance notice.

In addition to the drug possession charge, Volpato has also been charged with exceeding the speed limit. The specific speed at which he was travelling has not been disclosed. The incident occurred while Volpato was on leave from his Italian club, AS Roma, following the conclusion of the Serie A season.

Volpato made his senior international debut for the Socceroos in November 2023, featuring in World Cup qualifiers. His decision to switch allegiance from Italy to Australia was a significant move for the national team. The charges now cast a shadow over his burgeoning international career and his future with AS Roma.
