Australia news live: Jonathon Duniam to retire from politics; father and daughter found dead in Sydney river

A seven-year-old girl's body was recovered from Sydney's Parramatta River on Saturday, hours after her father was found dead in the same waterway. Emergency services were alerted around 11:45 am when a passerby spotted a man's body near a small boat in Bayview Park, Concord. Police believe the man, believed to be in his 40s from the Westmead area, had hired the vessel earlier that day. Upon inspecting the boat, officers discovered his seven-year-old daughter was missing, and specialist divers later found her body. Superintendent Christine McDonald of the Burwood Police Area Command called the incident an "absolute tragedy." A family friend had contacted authorities at 12:30 pm for a welfare check on the father and daughter, unaware that police had already located the man's body. The child's mother is cooperating with investigators, and a crime scene has been established for forensic examination of the hired vessel.
