Audio-Technica Launches First Wireless Open-Back Headphones

Audio-Technica officially introduced the ATH-AL5NC Open-Back Wireless Headphones on September 9, 2026, marking the company's inaugural venture into wireless open-back headphone technology. Priced at $279 USD, this release addresses a niche within the headphone market by combining the distinct acoustic characteristics of open-back designs with modern wireless convenience. Open-back headphones are traditionally characterized by their unsealed earcups, which allow for natural sound projection and improved airflow, reducing heat buildup around the ears. This design, however, inherently lacks noise isolation and permits sound leakage. The ATH-AL5NC aims to deliver the open-back soundstage while incorporating wireless functionality.

At the core of the ATH-AL5NC's audio performance are its 53mm open-back drivers, engineered to provide a natural and spacious sound profile. For wireless audio transmission, the headphones support high-resolution streaming with LDAC, AAC, and SBC codecs, enabling playback of 24-bit/96kHz audio. Despite the substantial driver size, Audio-Technica has focused on user comfort, designing the headphones with minimal clamping pressure for extended listening sessions. The physical weight of the ATH-AL5NC is 240 grams. A built-in microphone is included for handling phone calls and for use during wireless gaming.

Battery life is a significant feature of the ATH-AL5NC, with Audio-Technica claiming up to 75 hours of continuous playback on a single full charge. When the dedicated noise reduction mode is activated, the battery life is rated at 50 hours. The headphones also incorporate a rapid charging function, providing approximately eight hours of listening time from just a 15-minute charge. Connectivity is enhanced through multipoint Bluetooth pairing, allowing the ATH-AL5NC to maintain simultaneous connections with two devices.
